Kitty Hawk Woods

Welcome to the OBX

Kitty Hawk is the first Outer Banks town visitors will come to when arriving by car and crossing the Wright Memorial Bridge from the North. Kitty Hawk has many public beaches with nearby public parking, making it an easy town to visit the beach for the day. For nature lovers, the Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Reserve offers an approximately 1.9 mile loop trail.

Kitty Hawk, like its neighbors to the south, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head, has 2 major roads running north to south, the first being NC Highway 12, also known as the bypass road. The other road is Virginia Dare Trail, or the beach road, offering visitors glimpses of the beach and several fishing piers. The beach road meanders along the shore and offers views of the Atlantic Ocean for most of the way. Here, the pace is slower, and a traveler will see beach houses of different styles built at various times throughout the last century. There will be an occasion shop or restaurant along the beach road, but it is a mostly residential area. Driving along the bypass road visitors will encounter places of business, shops, and restaurants of all descriptions. There is a mix of independently owned shops and restaurants, as well as fast food dining options, big box stores, and large grocery stores – truly something for everyone.
