Historic Riverfront Town
Edenton, a historic river town that began in the early 1700s, is often listed as one of the most beautiful towns in the South. The town was an early political and commercial center in the state, with many buildings dating from the 1700s, 1800s and early 1900s. Along Broad Street, the main street in the town, there are a number of independently owned shops and restaurants, as well as the historic Taylor Movie Theater.
One of the best ways for visitors to learn about Edenton is to take a ride on the trolley. The historic Edenton trolley takes visitors on a ride through the town pointing out sites of interest and teaching an interesting town history.
At the end of Broad Street is Edenton Bay where you will find a park, a visitor’s center and a historic river lighthouse. The courthouse green, located a block off of Broad Street, is dominated by the 1767 Chowan County Courthouse ,the oldest courthouse in NC still in continuous use. The courthouse is open to the public for tours.
