Natural Beauty

Camden County is noted for natural beauty in a rural setting.

The Camden County Heritage Museum and Historic Jail share the secrets of the Dismal Swamp, as well as many other interesting stories. Indian artifacts and military exhibits are on display and a self-guided Battle of South Mills Driving Tour is available. Hours: 10am-3pm on Saturdays, other times by appointment.

The Dismal Swamp State Park is an eco-tourism destination and features over 20 miles of hiking, biking and birding trails. Once used for logging, they invite you to explore the secrets of native plants, wildlife and history. A variety of stories from the past include Moonshiners, enslaved freedom seekers, Native American warriors and the Father of our Country, George Washington. The dark mirrored waters are a favorite place for paddlers to quietly step back in time. The historic Dismal Swamp Canal, the eastern border of the Park, is the oldest continually operating man made canal in the nation and continues to host recreational boats traveling on the Intracoastal Waterway.
